MIKEY DREAD at The Controls

Where and how did you grown as a child?
I grew up in Jamaica and spent my younger days up to age 12 between Port Antonio in Portland on the far Eastern coast of Jamaica and Negril, the most western Coast in Jamaica. I grew up curious about life and fascinated by inventions and radio transmission

How did you started to be implicated in reggae music?
I was drawn to the music by listening to Juke Boxes and sound systems until I eventually began spinning records as a DJ for my friend Howard Golding's sound,
" Safari Disco"this is where I began, then I later started to play for another sound as well called, "Sounds of Music".
I then began writing songs for myself and lots of poetry and School magazine articles which I used to get published in a newspaper called "The Children's Own" run by the Gleaner Company, a Jamaican daily newspaper.
After I graduated from Titchfield High School in Port Antonio I went to College in Kingston and studied Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at the then College Of Arts Science and Technology, now called "The University of Technology." When I left this college I got a job on radio as a Technical Operator on JBC(Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation) from here I created the formula for Reggae Broadcasting…..Dread At The Controls radio programming.

My first song:"Love the Dread" was recorded at King Tubby Studio in Waterhouse in Kingston 1977.I knew my style was different as I tried to find something I call "Natural tone" so I sound like me. Once you hear me talk you know you've heard that voice before.

Reggae is for all people regardless of race culture or color.
Music is diverse and special.
It is energy..
My music is a therapy for the soul.

After more than 25 years involved in reggae music industry, you are considered and recognized as a specialist and a pionneer in a lot of domain like broadcasting (radio, TV), production, own music style (song), and you never stop to take reggae door to door. And when i red your site biografy i saw that you are also an eternal student , isn't it?
Yes man, knowledge is power.I took time out to do my studies as I love communicating so I have to find ways of interpreting words with pictures so I can send the right message and also I went into Video production so I can preserve our heritage and give the world the story of reggae that is complete without any hype, from a Jamaican point of view
Right now I am touring a lot in Hawaii and the United States of America.I play with my band which is the original Soul Syndicate musicians like Fully Fullwood on Bass,Santa Davis on Drums and Tony Chin on Guitars plus I take my Engineer Scientist everywhere we play, so you see in my crew,"everybody is a star and a reggae pioneer in his own right.I feel proud to have such a band
